PICO II

1975 27'1" Pedrazzini Super Aquamar

Twin 260 hp,  8-cylinder Mercruiser 5.7 engines

Jerry & Jan Kennelly, Piedmont, Calif.

PICO II arrived at Lake Tahoe from the holiday isle of Ibiza, Spain last May, just several weeks before the June 2009 Concours. The Sierra Boat Company cleaned it up and it was entered into the Concours.  I had purchased it sight unseen over the internet and had never driven it. In fact, my first time in the drivers seat was for the “Roar Off” at the end of last year’s Concours.

I was to discover that the Pedrazzini is a fantastic lake boat for Tahoe.  If you remember last year’s “Roar Off”, the wind was up and the waves were very high.  I had to make my first ever drive over to attach the PICO II to a buoy in front of my house in Incline Village.  I had never attached a boat to a buoy before in any weather, let alone in high waves.  But with the special hull design of the Pedrazzini intended to deal with the Mediterranean Sea, it cut through extremely heavy water like a Coast Guard rescue ship.  In addition to its nearly 28 foot length and twin engines, it benefits from an extremely wide beam of 9’6”.

It imparts a sense of safety and stability in any waters, which is extremely important for me to get my wife to participate.  I think I possess one of the greatest wooden boats that are appropriate for the waters of Lake Tahoe.
